Grit
There was a time when it was thought that budgerigars required grit to help grind up their food in their gizzard, like a chicken or a pigeon. Budgerigars do not have gizzards – they have a crop and they de-husk their seed before swallowing it and then it enters their crop where it is stored prior to digestion. However, you can feed your budgerigars mineralised grit which is made up of ground oyster shell and such-like, which will provide them with essential minerals. If, however, you are already supplementing your budgerigars with minerals, this is not required.
